I always look forward to meeting up with our athletes for in-person interviews. This month, we had to do things a little differently, and Justin answered my questions over email. Thanks for taking time out of your quarantine day to share, Justin!

* * * * *

If you meet up with Justin during 5:45am classes or on the weekend, give yourself and challenge and try to stick with his firebreathing pace. He knows how to grind through a long metcon and he's game to race you right to the end. Justin always comes to class with a grin, works hard to improve his technique and skills, and will stick around to chat with friends and commiserate over the workout.

How long have you been a member at CF100 and what brought you to us?

Ok, so I had to go look this up, but it appears that I have been a member since December of 2017! When we moved to Bay, CF100 was the closest CrossFit gym to my house, so it was my first call and after my first workout I never went anywhere else.

What kinds of fitness have you enjoyed in the past (childhood on up) and are you still active in any of those sports/activities?

I was a competitive swimmer growing up, from age 6 until 18. After college, I picked up triathlon after one of my roommates from college was looking for something to do to get active. We signed up and then trained for a sprint triathlon. I was so hooked after the first one that I signed up for two more sprints the day after finishing my first one.
I spent the next 10 years racing triathlon and the last 6 were spent doing full and half Ironman races. There have also been a smattering of running races (full and half marathons) as well as open water swims.

Any interesting travels, hobbies?

I travel a LOT for work, so my favorite hobby is sitting at home relaxing, much to my wife's dismay.

Tell us a little about your work:

I work for Microsoft helping our biggest customers adopt new services that we launch on our cloud platform, Azure.

And tell us about your family:

Proud husband to my wife of 12 years, Abby. We have three boys, JJ (14), Fisher (12), and Miles (11).

What is your favorite kind of workout or movement at the gym?

With my background in endurance sports, all the long metcons seem to be where I excel, but I really enjoy trying to get better at the things I'm not good at, which would be the Olympic lifts and gymnastics movements. I REALLY want to get a muscle up one day!

Are you competitive and is there anyone you look to as a pacing buddy or partner at the gym?

I am very competitive! It's fun trying to keep up with John Heisler or any of the coaches who come to the 5:45 class!

What motivates you to come to class and/or to push yourself through a workout?

Our community. One of the reasons I sought out a CrossFit gym rather than just going and lifting weights somewhere is that I enjoy the community CrossFit builds, as well as the competition aspect.

Any current fitness goals (skill-related, health/nutrition)?

Bar and ring muscle ups!

What advice do you have for someone just starting out with CrossFit?

I am probably the last person who should be giving advice about CrossFit, but I would say, "Come for the people, trust in the coaches, stay for the results."

What will keep you coming back to CF100?

100% the people!
